Futon Mattress manufacturers In the introduction of the National Bedding Center

Futon mattress manufacturers in the introduction of the National Bedding Center here last month reported a fantastic turnout, an optimistic mood among buyers and an increase in the amount of orders compared with the July marketplace.

Most credited the Dallas Market Center's boosting of this event, while one maker said the enhanced buying environment might be an indication of financial recovery, at least in the south central states. Most buyers came from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas, but some came from further away.

Jim Tobin, senior vice president of Spring Air, said "I had been pleasantly surprised by the traffic. To tell you the truth, I was somehow skeptical before the marketplace. I didn't find a federal representation, although we did see a good deal of people." Tobin stated that there were 450 retailers showing up to take pictures of Vanna White, the firm's spokeswoman.

Dave Powers, regional vice president of Simmons, stated, "Our Traffic was up roughly 60 percent over July. I was really satisfied with the traffic and sort of amazed with the disposition of the consumers, too. They certainly were not reserved." Powers said he saw "a much wider mix [of buyers] than previous markets," adding that buyers came from Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, who had purchased queen size futon mattresses.

Ron Ainsworth, senior vice president of sales for Somma, stated, "We had a significant increase to the traffic which we normally get there. Vince Compagno, executive vice president of Kingsdown's central Branch, stated, "Saturday was great, Sunday was traffic. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were very quite. We'd been out of the market for a year, and we've got more people in the area by early afternoon on Sunday than we did last time. I think Dallas is re-emerging as a regional industry."


William Brey, president of Restonic, said visitors in his showroom to search for a queen size futon mattress were up 20 percent. "We were quite delighted with it," he said. We think a few of the things the market didn't restore traffic were successful. We were very active."

Brey said while he saw "a scattering of federal people," the overwhelming majority of buyers were regional. "The market was surprisingly good given the very soft retail season that many had since'91. I believe we might be surprised by what happens in the first half of'92," he said, adding that in the south central states, the recession may be ending.

Manufacturers attributed the turnout to the Dallas Market Center's publicity for the event, which included a direct-mail campaign to attract buyers to go and buy queen size futon mattresses. Tobin noted, "A great deal of effort and time was put into it. The key will be if that will last. A one-time shot of the time and effort isn't going to work."

W. Eric Hinshaw, president of Kingsdown, said his firm waited Until December to make a commitment to lease its own showroom. "I was pretty darn skeptical of the entire thing. In cases like this, I had been proved to be incorrect. Brey said, "I think it will take several markets to really assess the center. They are costly, and they do need to create a certain number of orders to produce the industry worthwhile."

He explained to draw more furniture buyers into the market the DMC will Need to bring in more case goods and upholstery suppliers to the current market, adding, "I believe the Dallas market will need to pull a few of those folks back in to be able to sustain the increased traffic."

1 buyer, Carl Escuda, owner of New York Furniture Co. in Shreveport, La., appreciated with the bedding makers situated on one floor. "If was real easy to store," he said. "If you are using a line of bedding, the one that you're doing business with sees you see his contest and it keeps him on his feet."

Since buyers took an express elevator to get to the 13th floor, there were fewer people who were just browsing on their way to other showrooms, said Ainsworth. He explained, "Our account was up considerably, and they were all qualified buyers."

Powers agreed that the state elevator "worked out phenomenally," imagining retailers didn't get sidetracked and stop at other showrooms on the way into the bedding center.

1 complaint expressed by a few manufacturers of queen size futon mattress was that DMC Receptions were held at the middle of the ground, which preferred nearby showrooms. Both Powers and Compagno said the problem could be solved by holding events across the ground.
